Are You Following Your Fascination
When you follow your fascination, it becomes a different life. The life you ought to be living, is the one you are living.
Many of you may know the story about the Professor in Crete who had set up an institute to further human understanding and peace. At the end of a conference, someone asked him ‘What is the meaning of life?’ His response to this was to take a small circular mirror from his wallet and explain to the group that as a child he found it at the site of a crash and, unable to piece the whole mirror together again, he kept the largest piece and rubbed it into a smooth disc on stones. As a child he played with it, using it to shine light into areas where it might not otherwise go, under rocks, behind his closet and so on.
As an adult, he found himself toying with it occasionally, and realised that it was a metaphor for how he was living his life. He knew he was not the light, nor was he the source of it. And light, in the form of truth, knowledge and understanding, is there, but would only shine in many dark places if he reflected it.
He understood that he was a fragment of a mirror, the shape and design of which he would never comprehend. And he knew that with what he had he could shine light into the dark places in men’s hearts, and perhaps change some things for some people. And if not, that was ok, too.
This ‘What is the meaning of life?’ question comes in many forms. ‘Why am I doing this?’, ‘Why am I here?’,'What’s the point?’, ‘There must be more to life than this!’, ‘Why is it always happening to me?’, ‘I could never do that, it’s not me’, ‘Is my life ever going to get better?’
Joseph Campbell, mythologist, philosopher, thinker, suggests that we’re not really seeking for the meaning of life, what we’re seeking is an experience of being alive, “so that our life experiences on the physical plane will have resonances within our own innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive”.
It’s at times like this that we are so present in ourselves that we are unaware of ourselves. There is no sense of separation because we are so present in what is happening around us as well. As the sense of timelessness continues, we are living in the moment, just having a moment, having a moment, endlessly…
What is it that takes your attention so intently that you ‘lose yourself’ in what you are doing?
What are the things that you plan to do ‘when I have the time’ or ‘when I have the money’ or ‘when I do the things that need to be done’? When I hear these things I wonder if, while earning a living, a life is being wasted.
What kinds of things hold your fascination? Even if you’re not sure of the practical accomplishment, what do you so desire that it would hold your attention for 10, 20 or even 50 years?
